As soon as I discovered that August 14th is “National Creamsicle Day”, I knew I had to feature a recipe for homemade orange creamsicles, especially after Sweet Thing recently brought home a box of orange creamsicles that I remember enjoying as a child. With all of the “who knows what” that goes into processed food these days, I wanted to find a recipe that contained only ingredients that I could pronounce and were natural. After doing a quick online search, I think I found just the one from Carrie Barnard at the “Desserts on a Dime” Web site! Only three ingredients are needed, and “the orange cream flavor is decadent,” according to Carrie. Without further ado, here’s Carrie’s recipe for homemade orange creamsicles.
Orange Creamsicle Popsicles
(from: dessertsonadime.com
Ingredients
1 cup orange juice
1 cup vanilla Greek yogurt
1 Tablespoon granulated sugar
Directions:
Place all the ingredients into a blender. Blend until smooth.
Pour the mixture into popsicle molds and freeze for at least 6 hours or, preferably, overnight.
Variations
- Yogurt: Substitute plain Greek yogurt to make this Orange Creamsicle Recipe.
- Ice cream: You can use vanilla ice cream instead of yogurt.
- Full fat coconut milk: Try using this instead of yogurt for a rich and creamy popsicle treat.
- Sweetened condensed milk and heavy cream: Use 1/2 cup of each for a rich and decadent treat.
- Lemon or lime juice: For a fun flavor twist, use lemonade or lime juice to make this recipe. I think pineapple juice would also be great and taste like a Dole Whip.
- Different flavor yogurt: While vanilla will result in a classic flavor, try others for something different. You might be surprised with all of the combinations you come up with.
- Orange zest: Finely grate a little orange zest and add to the popsicle mixture before freezing. It will add even more flavor and a pop of color.
- Sweetener: Other options to try include honey or maple syrup.
How long will creamsicle popsicles last?
They will last up to 6 months in the freezer if stored properly. I suggest removing them from the molds and placing inside a freezer bag. The popsicle molds are not airtight and can lead to freezer burn over time.
So, there you have it: a recipe for homemade “Orange Creamsicle Popsicles” presented to you in honor of “National Creamsicle Day”! As soon as I discovered this recipe, I immediately went out and purchased the ingredients that I didn’t have on hand (the orange juice and the vanilla Greek yogurt), so I could make my first — and probably NOT last — batch of Orange Creamsicles! In fact, I’ve already made TWO batches of ’em!
For the first batch, I followed the recipe exactly — something I do whenever I’m trying new recipes. I’m happy to report that they were so refreshing, but because I don’t really drink much orange juice, I thought they were a bit too sour and not as creamy as I was expecting.
So… I decided to try one of the variations mentioned in the recipe. Since the orange creamsicles I grew up with were made with ice cream, I decided to try a batch made with vanilla ice cream instead of the Greek yogurt (something that’s relatively new to my taste buds). However, “the jury is still out” on these popsicles made with the vanilla ice cream, so I’ll update y’all on what I think of this variation as soon as I give one a try.
In the meantime, I hope you’ll give this simple recipe a try and then take a moment to let me know what you thought of it. Take care!
